2020-21 Houston Wild Tryouts

Tryout Registration Information

The following procedures and guidelines will be used for the 2020-21 Houston Wild tryouts.

register here

The Registration "2020-21 Houston Wild Tryouts" is not currently available.

To participate in the Houston Wild's tryouts, players should REGISTER ONLINE by clicking the 2020-21 Hockey Season Tryout Registration link at the top of this page.  Open/close dates for online registrations are as follows:
  • Aug 8/9 tryouts will close at 10:00pm CST Fri/Aug 7.
  • Aug 15/16 tryouts will reopen Mon/Aug 10 at 6:00am CST and close at 10:00pm CST Fri/Aug 14.

Each player's NEW 2020-21 USA Hockey Registration Confirmation number will be required to complete a tryout registration (online or walk-up).  Visit USAH 2020-21 Season Membership Registration to register your player.

  • Online:     18U AA - $40
  • Online:     ALL other teams - $65
  • Walk-up/day of or offline:   additional $20 (cash or check only)
  • No pro-rated fees.  No refunds.
The cost of tryouts is ALL-INCLUSIVE.  If a Player tries out but is not selected for the AA team in his/her age division, that Player may tryout the following weekend for the A1/A2 team (as the case may be) at that age division WITHOUT ADDITIONAL CHARGE OR REGISTRATION.
(Example: Player A is registered for and attends try-outs for the 12UAA team but is not offered a roster position on the 12UAA team.  Should Player A wish to be considered for the other 12U teams, he/she may attend the 12U tryouts the following weekend without any further registration or payment. Player A need only present him/herself at check-in at the scheduled 12U A1/A2 tryouts.)

Absences from tryouts will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Any player unable to attend tryouts as scheduled, but who wishes to be considered for a 2020-21 Houston Wild team, MUST:
  • Register and pay for tryouts using the online registration link above
  • Communicate the player’s intentions/absence to Houston Wild President, Laura Dumas, Coach-in-Chief, Bobby Reynolds, Associate Coach-in-Chief and Director of Player Development, Bob House, or the appropriate Head Coach.
Similarly, any player who will miss a single tryout session should reach out to the above Wild representative(s) to confirm from which session he will be absent.

CHECK IN - Your player should arrive at the rink for check-in forty-five (45) minutes prior to the assigned tryout time.  All players registered to try out for a particular team should be present for the first scheduled tryout session for that team (see 'Absences' below).
PINNIES - Upon check-in, your player will be assigned a clean/fresh numbered/colored tryout pinnie.  All players must RETURN HIS/HER PINNIE AFTER EACH TRYOUT SESSION, regardless of date, rink, or level.
WATER BOTTLES - All players must bring their OWN, CLEARLY LABELED, PRE-FILLED WATER BOTTLE to each tryout session.
TEMPERATURE SCREENING - All tryout participants will be subject to temperature screening before entering the rink and will be required to apply hand sanitizer.  Please refer to the adjacent COVID-19 rules and guidelines for additional information.
RINK ACCESS (PLAYERS) - Aside from checking in to receive their assigned pinnies – and with the exception of goalies who will be permitted to enter the rink 20 minutes prior to their scheduled ice time – players will not be permitted to enter the rink until 10 minutes prior to their scheduled tryout session.  Skaters and goalies must exit the rink within 10 minutes following their session.
RINK ACCESS (PARENTS) - Due to COVID-19, and in accordance with the rules and guidelines that applied to the 2020 development clinics, all locker rooms and spectator areas will remain closed throughout the 2020-2021 tryouts.  Only board members, coaches, evaluators, and designated volunteers necessary to administer the tryout process will be allowed inside the rink.
Parents will NOT be allowed into the facility for any reason during the tryout process, except as specifically permitted to assist 12U and 10U goalies prior to their sessions or to use the restroom.  Parents are instead encouraged to watch the tryout sessions on LiveBarn.
We understand that other programs/facilities may have different rules, but the Wild is committed to doing whatever it can to maintain healthy social distancing, limit group sizes as much as possible, ease the burden on volunteers and rink staff for maintaining clean facilities, and help prevent the further spread of COVID-19.  We regret that we cannot permit parent spectators, and we greatly appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this regard.

A Head Coach may or may not choose to be on the ice during his team’s tryout sessions.
Designated coaches, as well as six (6) to eight (8) independent evaluators at each age division, will conduct evaluations of every player.
The coaches and evaluators are all vetted and approved by Coach-in-Chief, Bobby Reynolds, and Associate Coach-in-Chief and Director of Player Development, Bob House.  Collectively, the coaches and independent evaluators have professional hockey, high-level college, and/or significant coaching experience, or a combination thereof, and have been chosen for their experience and/or expertise. Players will be placed on a particular team based on the collective recommendations of the coaches and evaluators.
Coaches and evaluators may, at their discretion, make cuts after any tryout session.  In such cases, the players will be advised, before they leave the ice at the end of the session, to watch for an Advancement List, which will be posted as soon as possible following that session.  To maintain social distancing, such list shall be posted online.
A1/A2 - Players attending 12U or 14U tryouts on August 15-16, 2020, will be evaluated (at their respective age division) for both the A1/A2 teams.  Upon completion of the August 15-16 tryouts, the respective A1/A2 roster offers will be posted simultaneously.

Tryout Schedule

The Texas Amateur Hockey Association (TAHA) and Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League (DSTHL) have established a cooperative policy for the 2020-21 season tryouts to ensure tryout schedules that allow players both the opportunity and option to try out for a desired level or team and a distinct separation between that level and the subsequent level.
(Example: Tier I/AAA tryouts take place before Tier II/AA tryouts that take place before A1/A2/House-Rec tryouts.)
Tryouts are on the calendar for:
  • August 8/9 – 10UAA, 12UAA, 14UAA, 16UAA & 18UAA
  • August 15 – 10UA, 12UA, 14UA & 16UA
See adjacent for (printable) schedule by 'team' and below for schedule by day/time. Once posted, the schedule subject to change in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Player Offers & Commitments

To maintain social distancing, no final Team Rosters will be posted in hardcopy anywhere at the rink following any session as was done in seasons past.  All such rosters shall be posted online.
Players whose names appear on the Team Roster after the team’s last tryout session are thereby offered a roster spot on that Houston Wild team.
Team Rosters will be posted on our website within approximately sixty (60) minutes of completion of tryouts for each team.
If your player’s name is on the list of players being offered a spot on a Houston Wild team roster, you should attend the Commitment/Signing Room immediately upon such posting to electronically (online) submit a $560 commitment fee and complete/execute all applicable/required documentation (eg: Player Agreement, Codes of Conduct, payment plan, etc.).
As in prior years, the Commitment/Signing Room will have laptops and/or required forms for parents’ use in completing the commitment process.  However, due to COVID-19, the number of people allowed in the Commitment Room at any given time will be limited to maintain social distancing.  For added safety and convenience, parents are encouraged to bring their own, Wi-Fi-enabled smart phone or tablet, which they may also use while at the rink to complete the commitment process.
Houston Wild personnel will be on site to make arrangements for any hard copy signatures and manual payment arrangements (cash, check, or credit card) that may be necessary.
Out of respect for all competing players, Houston Wild coaches and volunteers – and most certainly in light of the time frame between tryouts and the beginning of the season – all players and parents participating in the Houston Wild tryouts should be prepared to commit and sign contracts at that time if so offered.

Failure to commit within two (2) hours of the roster posting will be considered a forfeiture of that roster spot which will be offered to another player.
CANADIAN/INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER FORMS:  In order to expedite the rostering process and ensure all players are roster-eligible to participate in the Labor Day Weekend tournament, Canadian and International Players shall be required to complete/submit the necessary USAH youth hockey transfer forms within forty-eight (48) hours of the completion of their age division tryouts (access via adjacent link).

Commitment Fees, Player Registration Fees, & Payment Plans

Please see below for 2020-21 Commitment Fees and Player Registration Fees.
All players wishing to accept an offered roster position with the Houston Wild must pay a Commitment Fee of $560 immediately after being offered such position.  The Houston Wild offers two (2) online payment options for Player Registration Fees (i.e. total season fees less Commitment Fee):
  • Option 1: Pay your Player Registration Fee in full at the same time as payment of Commitment Fee (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or checking account accepted).
  • Option 2: Divide your Player’s Registration Fee (total player fees less Commitment Fee) into four (4) equal payments to be automatically charged (using the same payment method as used for the Commitment Fee) on September 15, October 15, November 15, and December 15.
If you are unable to complete online payment of your player’s Commitment Fee and/or Player Registration Fee, you are responsible, within the designated commitment timeline, to contact Houston Wild Treasurer, Laura Horn, to make arrangements for offline payment.

In addition to offering reduced registration fees for goalies, each goalie placed on a Houston Wild roster will be offered two (2) $50 rebates to be used toward additional goalie coaching by a coach of their choice.  Each goalie will receive a rebate upon presentation of receipts and/or proof of attendance at additional goalie training sessions or clinics.
We hope this will allow our goalies and their families the opportunity to access additional training opportunities throughout the season according to their own preferences and schedules.  Rebates are not redeemable for cash and only one (1) rebate per lesson per goalie is available.

Financial Assistance is available for those in need: however, per DSTHL rules, the Board is not permitted to consider requests for financial assistance until after the player requesting assistance has committed to a Houston Wild team.
For more information, please see the Financial Assistance Application Form on our About Us page and/or contact Houston Wild President, Laura Dumas.

TAHA Community-Based Rule

As a TAHA member association, the Houston Wild is bound by TAHA's 'community-based' policy for all our teams.
If Houston is not the closest travel hockey community to the primary residence of a player's immediate family, the onus is on the player's family to seek permission from the TAHA Travel Section President to attend the Wild tryouts.  We strongly suggest that you initiate such requests at least two (2) weeks prior to the date of the Wild tryout that your player wishes to attend.
Any players residing within TAHA's jurisdiction but outside Houston boundaries must present evidence of such permission prior to attending Wild tryouts.
For more information on TAHA's 'community-based' policy, please see the TAHA Guidebook/Rulebook, particularly Page 19.

2012 Birth Year Players

8U 2012 birth year (Mite Major) players trying out for the Wild are encouraged to be familiar with the TAHA Mite ADM Policy, located on Page 30 of the TAHA Guidebook/Rulebook. Players 2013 or younger are not eligible to participate with the Houston Wild travel program until the 2021-22 season.
