By Houston Wild, 02/26/19, 3:00PM CST

Released statement for the
Merger of the Houston Wild and the Houston Hurricanes Travel Hockey Programs

February 26th, 2019

At the end of the 2018-19 travel season, The Houston Wild and the Houston Hurricanes youth travel hockey organizations will merge into one organization.  This travel organization will continue to play under the name of the Houston Wild and remain within the Dallas Stars Travel Hockey League (DSTHL).  The league has agreed that they will allow our new organization to have up to 12 teams in the DSTHL, if talent allows.  The maximum allowance of teams will be 3 at each of the 10U, 12U and 14U levels, 2 at the 16U level, and 1 at the 18U level.

Our new organization will be the only youth travel hockey organization in the greater Houston area.  As such, there is a great responsibility for our organization to meet the needs of all travel ready players, those with future aspirations to play travel, and the youth hockey community at large.  We understand this responsibility, and are committed to serving the Houston youth hockey community in a beneficial way.

In operating the travel organization, the Houston Wild will put player development and integrity at the forefront of all planning and decision-making. The collective goals of the Wild will be as follows:

  • To promote a ‘Long Term Player Development Model’ that focuses on the player’s development, whether the player is inexperienced or advanced.  Development will be based on the USA Hockey American Development Model (ADM).
  • To make decisions that benefit the hockey families who live in our geographic area of Houston and the surrounding communities.
  • To foster a development and mentoring environment which advances youth hockey in a positive manner.
  • To strengthen the core youth hockey program we represent.
  • To actively support and promote ice hockey in the Houston area and surrounding communities.
