Houston Wild 2012-13 Team Descriptions

 

** With our GOAL of building the top AA and A teams possible to compete in the DALLAS STARS TRAVEL HOCKEY LEAGUE (DSTHL) at each USAH age division while continuing to focus on player development at all levels, not only for the upcoming season but for subsequent seasons, each Wild AA and Wild Minor team will be comprised of those USAH age level players, regardless of birth year, that meet the criteria of being the most competitive and skilled players available for that team.

The mix of major/minor birth years will, therefore, vary from one team to another for each level; there shall be no predetermined birth year ratios at any level.

18U AA
Co-Coaches: Mark Hockman and Dan O’Sullivan
Assistant Coach: Arthur Jean
 
The U18 AA team will be chosen from 94/95 birth year players** (per above) and will participate in the 18U AA division of the DSTHL. This team will compete in the Annual Dallas Stars Texas Shootout Sept 1-3, 2012 and will challenge for the 2013 18U Tier II Texas State Championship.

16U AA
Head Coach: Bill Gallagher
Assistant Coaches: Jimmy Miller and Tim Sanghera
 
The Midget Minor 16U AA team will be chosen from 96/97 birth year players** (per above) and will participate in the 16U AA division of the DSTHL. This team will compete in the Annual Dallas Stars Texas Shootout Sept 1-3, 2012 and will challenge for the 2013 16U Tier II Texas State Championship.

16U Minor

The Bantam AA team will be chosen from 98/99 birth year players** (per above) and will participate in the Bantam AA division of the DSTHL. This team will compete in the Annual Dallas Stars Texas Shootout Sept 1-3, 2012 and will challenge for the 2013 U14 Tier II Texas State Championship.

Bantam Minor

The PeeWee Minor team will be chosen from 00/01 birth year players** (per above) with a goal of seeding/participating in the PeeWee A division of the DSTHL upon a leveling format at the Annual Dallas Stars Texas Shootout Sept 1-3, 2012.

Squirt AA
Head Coach: Rod Fenwick
Assistant Coaches: Jim Ferguson / TBD
 
The Squirt AA team will be chosen from 02/03 birth year players** (per above) and will participate in the Squirt AA division of the DSTHL. This team will compete in the Annual Dallas Stars Texas Shootout Sept 1-3, 2012.
 
Coach Fenwick anticipates participating in 2-3 Dallas area tournaments and one fly away tournament during either MLK weekend or President’s Day weekend.    For the major holidays, players should expect to compete in a Thanksgiving tournament in Dallas which begins Friday after Thanksgiving Day. No tournaments or practices will be planned over the Christmas break.   
 
The anticipated practice schedule will be one weekday practice and twice on the weekends when the team is not traveling. Prior to travel weekends, there may be two weekday practices.   
 
Off-ice dry land which will include conditioning, coordination skills, positioning, plays, and team building drills will be part of regular practices.  Players will be expected to employ a high work ethic while building important hockey skills and the teamwork necessary to compete at high levels.

It was an unlikely cradle for a hockey prodigy.

A sun-baked expanse of concrete, equipped with a makeshift set of boards—the haven of a passionate cadre of in-line skaters who in the mid-1990s had adapted the game of Wayne Gretzky to the climate of southern California. From the moment three-year-old Emerson Etem wobbled onto the roller-hockey surface at the Los Altos YMCA, it was clear he’d found his métier. “He just had this ability on wheels,” recalls his mother Patricia, a former Olympic rower. “It was a lot of fun to watch. But more than anything, I was intrigued.”
